Corgi Labrador Mix Facts

Corgi Labrador Mix Facts

Corgi labrador mix facts

The Corgi Lab Mix is a mixed dog breed that was created by combining a Labrador and a Welsh Corgi. Also known as the Corgidor, this breed is energetic, fun and very lovable. What do you expect from combining a bouncy Labrador with an active ball of fluff like a Corgi?

The Labrador and Corgi are established family dogs. These dogs are known to bond with their owners and become protectors and their friends. Labradors love to be with their human family, to do everything that their owners do. They don’t mind kids and in fact, will love them and care for them just like they would their pups. Labs are always on the go and are very intelligent. They guide the less abled and are employed as service dogs.

Corgis, on the other hand, prefer to serve only one master which is why most live in small apartments together with their single owners. But this does not mean that the Corgi is an anti-social breed; it’s simply devoted and very protective of their master. Corgis can live with other pets as well as other Corgis. They can tolerate children and will love to be the center of attention.

3 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Get a Lab Corgi Mix

Corgi labrador mix facts

1.This Mixed Breed Dog Barks A Lot

One of the most common complaints of Lab Corgi Mix owners is that their dogs tend to bark uncontrollably especially during nighttime. Because this dog is a mixture of two barking breeds, it is easy to see where it has inherited this irritating trait. A Lab mixed with a Corgi should, therefore, be trained early and should get enough exercise daily to avoid this annoying barking habit.

2. You Need To Take It Long Walks And A Lot Of Exercises

Corgis and Labs are very active dogs, and it’s natural that a combination will also be energetic mixed breeds. If you are not an active person or you, don’t find exercising and long walks interesting then do not get a Corgi Lab Mix.

3. Will Not Do Well As A Guard Dog

Although Labradors and Corgis are very affectionate and are devoted dogs, their outgoing and friendly nature does not make them a good guard dog. This mixed breed was not built for attacking intruders, and the most this dog can do is to bark and alert its master.

3 Reasons Why You Should Get a Corgi Mixed with Lab

Corgi labrador mix facts

1. These Are Great Family Dogs

There’s no doubt about it, being a family dog is where Lab Corgi mixes shine. They want to be with their owners all the time and crave for their attention. They want to serve and please their masters. Therefore, they quickly learn and perform tricks. These dogs will love to be with children and will tolerate playtime even becoming their dolls for dress up! They also go well with other pets, even cats for as long as they are introduced to the pack as a puppy.

2. Are Very Smart And Easy To Train

A Corgi crossed with a Lab is a dog that’s very easy to train. They are sharp as they are smart. They need constant training to be able to learn more complicated tricks. To build your dog’s ability to learn new things, train him every day. You must also house proof your puppy or new dog early and introduce him to other dogs to prevent behavioral issues as it gets older.

3. Will Make You Active

If you’re complaining that you’re not getting enough exercise then get a Lab Corgi mix. This dog needs long walks and playtime, so you’ll have your hands full. They love to play fetch, catch Frisbees and go on long jogs with you. They also want to ride cars, bikes, anything that moves to take them to places. They want constant companionship and play so you’ll stay fit and trim.

A Lab crossed with a Corgi will either have a sturdy and large body combing from its Labrador heritage, or it can be a small and stocky dog as it takes after its Corgi parent.  An adult dog can weigh between 30 to 60 pounds and may grow from 10 to 24 inches tall.

It should also be considered whether the parent Corgi is a Pembroke Corgi or it came from the Cardigan line. Cardigan Welsh Corgis are heavier by as much as 10 pounds than their Pembroke cousins.

Labradors are generally heavier and taller compared to any Corgi breed. Therefore a Corgi Lab mix can weigh between 30 to 60 pounds depending on the distribution of genes from the parent breeds.

The Welsh Corgi is only about 10 to 13 inches high at the shoulder while a typical Labrador can be from 21 to 24 inches. Therefore the height of a pup may vary depending on which parent breed it takes after.

It’s hard to tell whether a Corgi Lab mix puppy will grow up tall or short, heavy or otherwise. You have to wait until your puppy is older and only then you will see what his possible adult size and weight will be.

These dogs come in a variety of colors with thick insulating undercoats. Labradors come in yellow, black and chocolate brown while Welsh Corgis display different color patterns rather than have a single color. A Lab Corgi mix will, therefore, have varying shades as well.

A litter of Corgi mixed with Lab puppies will have a black Corgi Lab mix or chocolate, sable, yellow, red or mixed color pup. No two puppies will be alike when it comes to color patterns and marks.

Both Corgis and Labradors are shedders and will keep on shedding their fur all year round. Therefore, Labs crossed with Corgis should be brushed weekly to manage to shed and to keep their lovely coats shiny and healthy. Using good dry or wet shampoo is necessary to keep your dog’s coat clean and tangle free. Use hypoallergenic and gentle products especially for puppies and for dogs with allergies.

These dogs need weekly bathing or at least after every swim if your dog loves to swim or play in water so you can remove chlorine and dirt from its fur.

The following dog organization and dog breed registry recognize the Corgi mixed with Lab dog breed:

When looking for the perfect Corgi Lab mix pup, it’s important to find reputable breeders before you decide on a particular dog. There are ways to find out if a breeder is of good standing. One of them is to consult the Pet Professional Guild to help you locate a trustworthy breeder from where you are located.

A reputable and responsible breeder will be able to openly discuss the health conditions of both parent breeds of the Corgi Lab Mix dog or puppy that you want to take home. He will present health clearances of both parents as well. A trustworthy breeder will entertain questions about the parent breeds and will show proof that purebred dogs were crossed.

The following are online sites where you can check out Lab crossed with Corgi puppies.

  • PuppyFind.com (International)
  • NextDayPets.com (International
  • Adopt-a-Pet.com (United States)
  • American Kennel Club (United States)
  • Petfinder.com (United States and Canada)
  • Green Field Puppies (United States)

Although it is easy to purchase mixed breed dogs online, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) recommends visiting a local shelter or rescue center to find dogs. The ASPCA discourages purchasing puppies online.

To avoid any mistakes in caring for your new Lab Corgi mix puppy, it’s essential to research on the breed. Take your puppy to a vet early as well.

Grooming Your Lab Crossed with Corgi

Corgi labrador mix facts

Aside from weekly brushes, a Corgi Lab mix needs regular baths to keep its fur and its lovely coat shiny and healthy. Not just any kind of soap or shampoo would do. You need to use the right shampoo that will deep clean its coat thoroughly and will not cause products to settle and cause irritation.

Your dog will shed all year round so regular brushing must be done no matter what their hair length is. There is no need to take this dog regularly to a groomer because its hair won’t grow very long. You can efficiently manage its grooming with the help of good shampoo.

1. Wahl Natural Pet No-Rinse Waterless Shampoo

A puppy will naturally make a lot of fuss when it’s new to bathing. Luckily, there are dry shampoos that will clean fur without the need to rinse like the Wahl Natural Pet No-Rinse Waterless Shampoo. This no-rinse shampoo is available in Lavender Chamomile and Coconut Lime Verbena. All you need to do is to rub a small amount on your dog’s fur, and he’ll be clean and smelling like fresh flowers all day.

2. Bodhi Dog Non-Toxic Waterless Shampoo

If your Corgi Lab mix pup has sensitive skin, then the Bodhi Dog Non-Toxic Waterless Shampoo will let you clean his fur without water and irritation. This is available in a convenient spray bottle too, so it’s easier to use.

3. Earthbath All-Natural Pet Shampoo

To remove deep-seated dirt and to give your dog’s fur a thorough wash, the Earthbath All-Natural Pet Shampoo is a good choice. This is 100% biodegradable and will lather quickly to clean every spot. Pay close attention to your dog’s paws, undersides and behind the ears because these are places where dirt usually remains.

Ear cleaning is necessary for a Lab Corgi Mix to prevent ear infections. If your dog is extra fussy about his ears, suspect a tick inside the ear or an infection. Take him to a vet to clean his ears and diagnose any problems early.

Lab Corgi Health Problems

Corgi labrador mix facts

The Corgi Lab may inherit health issues that are prevalent in its parent breeds. Poor health, lack of exercise and neglect of a dog’s grooming and living conditions may also predispose him to different medical conditions.

  1. Patellar luxation or dislocation of the knee caps
  2. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) elbow and shoulder dysplasia due to failure of the joints to develop
  3. Cataracts where the eye can be partially or entirely cloudy with fluid
  4. Central progressive retinal atrophy (CPRA) retinal degeneration that may lead to blindness
  5. Hypothyroidism caused by an underactive thyroid gland
  6. Intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) disease that affects the soft pads between the bones of the spine
  7. Von Willebrand’s disease, a type of blood disease that affects clotting ability of blood
  8. Idiopathic epilepsy or seizures of the brain

Corgi Lab Mix Food Requirements

Corgi labrador mix facts

Generally, a Lab Corgi should eat up to 4.5 cups of high-quality dog food daily, split into two equal meals. This dog needs to stay hydrated all day long. Feeding may also vary depending on the size of the dog and his activity requirements. Here are a few top dog food brands to consider:

1.Taste of the Wild High Prairie Formula

This dog food is for energetic and hunting Lab Corgi mixes. It is packed with protein and is grain-free. It is perfect for dogs with grain-allergies too.

2. Core Wellness

This is a high protein dog food with lower carbohydrate content for active and energetic dogs. The extra protein will help your lab grow strong and healthy. It is also grain-free to keep allergies and digestive trouble at bay.

3. Diamond Naturals

This is puppy food that comes with a balanced formula needed for growing dogs. It has proteins, vitamins, and minerals perfect for large breeds of dogs like Labs.

As there are good dog food choices for your dog, there is also food specifically human food that you should never give to your Lab Corgi.

  • Onions, chives, and garlic
  • Chicken bones especially cooked chicken bones
  • Salty foods and junk food
  • Chocolate, coffee, or tea
  • Alcohol or any liquor
  • Grapes or raisins

You wish to see your dog only in a good mood and health. To make it happen, their diet plan needs to be carefully designed, and the food they eat cautiously picked out. So, avoid purchasing the worst dry dog food, and search for, for example, Wellness Core Dog Food, Dog For Dog Food, or Nutra Thrive dog food supplement. For puppies, you can find good products made just for their needs, as in best puppy food brands, and for older dogs consider taking the best senior dry dog food.

Remember that your pooch is very unique and sometimes you can experiment with the best dry dog food for small dogs or the best large breed dry dog food based on their size. Just let your vet know if you’re about to make any change in the diet plan.

Lab crossed with Corgi Exercise Requirements.

Corgi labrador mix facts

A Lab crossed with a Corgi mix is very active and energetic.  This dog needs regular exercise, or else it may exhibit destructive behavior. A nice long walk that can last for at least two hours a day is perfect for this dog. Do your best to exercise and play with your dog yourself. This allows you to develop a strong bond with your dog. But if you are unable to, hire a dog walker to take your dog out for regular exercise.

Aside from walking and running, you may also enjoy hiking, swimming, or playing games like fetch and Frisbee throwing with your dog. Of all the mentioned activities, Lab Corgis love to swim. Take your dog to a local swimming pool for pets. You can also swim in a beach or ocean. You may also open a sprinkler in your garden for your dog to play in. An old kiddie pool will also work great if you can’t take your dog out for a swim.

Fetch and Frisbee throwing is perfect for training and exercising your dog. It will help develop his coordination as well. Give your dog water after every activity because just like humans, they want a cold, refreshing drink after a tiring activity. A few products to check out to exercise your dog:

1.Ruffwear Hover Craft

This is a long-distance flying disc made especially for dogs. This is strong and durable and will keep your Corgi Lab entertained and happy for hours.

2. Swamp Cooler from Ruffwear

This is a vest that your dog can wear as you take him out for a walk. It fits well, is adjustable, and will keep your dog warm when you take him out during cold mornings.

3. Polar Trex Winter Dog Boots

Take your dog for a long walk, but keep his paws protected with these durable dog boots. These are perfect when your dog walks in the snow or when hiking on tough and hard terrain.

Lab mixed with Corgi Training

Corgi labrador mix facts

The Corgi crossed with Lab Mix is smart and eager to please. It is one of the most comfortable dogs to train. The key to training retention is to do it every day and to teach using positive reinforcement.

Here are tips for training your Corgi Lab:

  1. Train Your Dog Early
As with most dogs, you must prepare your Lab Corgi the moment you take it home. Start with simple commands and phrases and repeat this daily. Once your dog has completed a command, you can move on to another one. Basic training like house proofing, potty training, and locating its bowl and bed are vital for pups.
  2. Be Consistent With Training
Commands should be consistent and straightforward. If you use local dialect to train your dog to sit, stay, or lie down, do so and let everyone know the commands. Don’t confuse your dog. Once your dog learns simple words and phrases, you can move your hand and body movements to command him.
  3. Offer Positive Reinforcement
For good behavior, you can pat your dog, play with him, or take him out for a walk. Use treats sparingly. If you must use treats, use healthy, organic treats so your dog won’t suffer from obesity and other health problems due to overfeeding.
  4. Train Your Dog In A Quiet Environment

Dogs like the Lab Corgi are easily distracted. To avoid this, train him in a pleasant, quiet environment. You can take him to the park or outdoors, where he is already familiar with the situation. It’s easier to train a dog in a place he is already familiar with rather than in a new location which can cause anxiety.

Lab Corgi Mix and Families

Corgi labrador mix facts

Corgi Lab dogs are family dogs. They want to be with their pack and consider children, especially young kids as their brothers or sisters. This dog will love to play and will even tolerate toddlers’ way of playing. They can roughhouse but will still be gentle and will never nip back at children.

Like most dogs that are not exposed to other dogs and people, a Corgi Lab mix may become anti-social and may display obnoxious behavior when with people or other dogs. Therefore you must consider training your dog early, exposing it to people and other dogs, especially when you live alone.

Involve the whole family in training your dog. This way, your Corgi Lab will grow up to be a friendly, well-rounded family dog.
